Twin Size Mattress

Let’s start by taking a look at the twin size mattress.

The twin size mattress typically features a 39 inch width and a 75 inch length.

This is a great mattress size for kids, once they’ve outgrown a crib mattress and should last all the way through adolescence.

When looking for a twin sized bed, you want to make sure to land on one that’s highly supportive in order to ensure proper bone and muscle development.

Gentle comfort layers will also be important, especially when your kiddo starts experiencing growing pains.

While grown-ups can comfortably snooze on a twin sized bed, we wouldn’t necessarily recommend them for adult sized sleepers. They can work in a pinch, but you won’t get nearly as much room as you will on other sizes.

Plus they’re not really built to accommodate more than one sleeper at a time.

A big plus or twin size beds is that they’re more affordable than full, queen or king size mattresses. It can often be a nice value buy if you can handle the size difference.

Speaking of size difference, let’s chat about the twins big sister, the twin XL.

Twin XL

Coming in at 39 inches wide and 80 inches long, the twin XL is just as wide as a twin, but with a little extra legroom. Though you could buy it for your home, you’ll mostly find these mattresses in college dorms.

While there may be some instances in which a twin XL could be useful, say if your child goes through a massive growth spurt when they’re young, we’d recommend going straight from a twin into a full sized mattress, so that your little one can enjoy both the increased length and increased width.

Full Size Mattress

The full has the 54 inch width and the 75 inch length. This bed is much wider than either the twin or twin XL and makes an excellent first grown-up bed.

Some will get this kind of mattress in their teens, most will wait until their young adults to grab a full.

Though roomy and comfortable for a single person, the major downside to the full is that it’s not quite big enough to accommodate a couple.

Sure you can squeeze two sleepers into this bed, but you’ll each have approximately the size of a crib mattress to yourself, so not the most ideal.

That being said the full can be considerably less expensive than a queen or king, so may work best for those on a budget or for those who live in slightly cramped quarters.

Queen Size Mattress

At 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, this lady is the most popular size bed in the United States. Personally this is my favorite mattress.

When I finally upgraded from a full to a queen I was surprised at just how much roomier a few inches made the bed feel.

It also made it much easier to share my mattress with other folks, which is a huge plus in my opinion.

In general we’d recommend the Queen for most people. Those who sleep with their kids or pets may find that they need even more room. See mattress that you can flip over.

King Size Mattress

Say hello to the luxuriously spacious king size mattress. This baby adds a whopping 16 inches of width to the queen, rounding out its dimensions to 76 inches by 80 inches. It’s huge and it’s inviting couples to enjoy all the space they could possibly ever want.

In general we think the king is best for folks who like to crowd their bed with pets kids or a ton of body pillows. It’s a lot of room and while that’s a nice bonus, it doesn’t always cancel out the fact that Kings can be quite expensive. Plus they take up a lot of space, so may only be appropriate for folks with a true master bedroom.

California King Size Mattress

It shaves off four inches from the width of a king and taxed them on to the length, resulting in a size of 72 inches by 84 inches.

This size mattress is best for big and tall folks as is one of the longest beds you’ll find on the market.

Before we finish up, I thought it might be fun to answer some of the most frequently asked questions we get about bed sizes.

Number one is what are the different bed sizes’

Well as we’ve seen here, the main ones you’ll be dealing with are the twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king.

Twin and twin XL beds are best for kids, full beds are fantastic for single adults and the queen, king and California king are all appropriate for partners or families.

Number two is what is the difference between a single bed and a twin bed?

This is a great question and truly there is no difference. They’re just different names for the same sized mattress, which again is 39 inches across and 75 inches long.

Last but not least is a queen bed big enough for two?

Absolutely. I love this bed for couples as it’s roomy enough for each person to have plenty of space. As a reminder queen-size mattresses are typically 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

That about does it for this article on bed dimensions.
